About the Speaker
Martin Dewhirst has lectured on Russian language and literature at the University of Glasgow since 1964. He is particularly interested in twentieth century Russian literature and has compiled many bibliographies on the subject for The Year's Work in Modern Language Studies. He has worked periodically on the Samizdat staff of Radio Liberty in Munich and is also a specialist on Soviet censorship and archives. Martin is also a translator and interpreter and a specialist on Soviet dissent. In 1994 he was a judge for the Booker Russian Novel Prize Committee.
He has been an OSCE election observer nine times in the former Soviet Union.
Martin is on the editorial board of East European Jewish Affairs and Birmingham Slavonic Monographs. He has an active interest in the Soviet and post-Soviet theatre and cinema. His favourite Russian writers are Dostoevskii, Chekhov and Solzhenitsyn. He was appointed Honorary Research Fellow at Glasgow University in October 2000.
